Kemitraan Negara Berkembang Scholarship, popularly known as KNB Scholarship, is a financial assistance offered by the Indonesian Government to prospective international students coming from developing countries to pursue their degree (Bachelor, Master or Doctorate Degree) at one of the universities in Indonesia. The scholarship was conceived in the 10th Conference of Heads of States of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries, 1st–6th September 1992. The Government of Republicof Indonesia began to offer the scholarship to potential students from NAM member countries in the following year.

KNB Scholarship Objectives:

Following are the program objectives of Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB) Scholarship:

  • To contribute to the human resource development in the developing countries.
  • To promote deeper cultural understanding and to strengthen the relationship between developing countries.
  • To improve Indonesian higher education institutions’ research capacity as a part of the national strategies in increasing the number of world-class universities in Indonesia.

No of Scholarships

In 2024, 222 scholarships will be given that is divided into:

  • Bachelors: 30
  • Masters: 162
  • PhD: 30

Scholarship Duration

1 Year Indonesian Language Training Program (BIPA) is compulsory for all applicants.

  • Bachelors: 8 Semesters (48 Months)
  • Masters: 4 Semesters (24 Months)
  • PhD: 8 Semesters (48 Months)

Scholarship Coverage

Indonesian Government KNB Scholarships provide the recipient with the following benefits:

  • A Settlement Allowance of IDR 1,250,000 will be given to new students upon
    their arrival in Indonesia;
  •  While taking the Indonesian language course and preparatory programs, the
    new students will only receive a Living Allowance of IDR 2,550,000 per month;
  • During the Master Program, the KNB students will receive a scheme of monthly
    allowance as detailed below:
    • Living Allowance IDR 2,550,000
    • Research Allowance IDR 400,000
    • Books Allowance IDR 350,000
  • A health insurance with a maximum of IDR 200,000 monthly premium (In case of
    the cost of medical services exceeded to those covered by the health insurance,
    the difference should be borne by the student);
  •  A round-trip international airfare (economy class) from the international airport
    of the student’s home countries to Indonesia, including local transport to the host university.

KNB Scholarship Requirements

  • Be a citizen of a developing country as defined by the Indonesian government.
  • Meet the academic requirements of the chosen program and university.
  • Provide IELTS, TOEFL ITP, TOEFL IBT, TOEIC.
  • Participants who come from English-speaking countries are exempted from the English Language Test.
  • Participants who have completed their previous education from an English Medium Institute are exempted from the English Language Test, they will show English Language Proficiency Proof.
  • The maximum age is 21 years for a bachelor’s scholarship.
  • The maximum age is 35 years for a master’s scholarship.
  • The maximum age is 40 years for PhD scholarship.
  • Provide a recommendation letter to apply for the KNB Scholarship from the Indonesian embassy or Indonesian consulate.
  • Provide academic recommendation letter.
  • A Completed online application form.
