Mitchell Drilling International is a diverse drilling services Company dedicated to safe, efficient and innovative Drilling program delivery for mining projects. As we expand our footprint throughout Africa we are looking to fill the following positions that will be based in Rwanda.
All candidates must have a sound knowledge of Diamond Drilling Surface Core Methods, Reverse Circulation Drilling Methods, Deep Hole Drilling Methods, Mud rotation operator – LDD, Large diameter drilling and Blast Hole Drilling.
Knowledge of drilling equipment such as Sandvik UDR 1500 Drill Rig’s and Sandvik DE 710’s is an added advantage.

The Auto-electrician reports to the Site Manager or Maintenance Coordinator.
Job summary / Overview
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing diesel-powered equipment and vehicles used in drilling operations. This includes servicing engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and other mechanical components of trucks, generators, compressors, and heavy machinery to ensure they operate efficiently and safely. The role involves conducting regular inspections, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting breakdowns, and collaborating with the maintenance team to minimize downtime. Working in challenging and remote environments, the Diesel Mechanic adheres to safety protocols and ensures compliance with company and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
Maintenance and Repairs
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems in vehicles and heavy equipment (e.g., trucks, drilling rigs, generators, and compressors).
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and fuel system issues using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Repair or replace faulty parts, including injectors, fuel pumps, gaskets, belts, and other components.
- Conduct preventive maintenance, such as oil changes, filter replacements, and cooling system servicing to extend equipment life.
Equipment Management
- Service and maintain drilling equipment, including power packs, winches, and air compressors, ensuring operational efficiency.
- Perform periodic inspections to identify wear and tear and ensure equipment meets safety and operational standards.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance schedules, repairs, and parts inventory for audit and operational purposes.
Field Support
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns in remote or field locations, minimizing downtime and ensuring smooth drilling operations.
- Assist with equipment assembly and disassembly during rig moves and relocations.
- Provide technical expertise and support during drilling operations and collaborate with other team members on troubleshooting tasks.
- Assist with welding and fabrication tasks as required for equipment repair or customization.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow safety protocols while working with heavy machinery and in hazardous environments.
- Ensure all work complies with company policies, industry standards, and environmental regulations.
- Participate in safety drills, toolbox talks, and training sessions to maintain a safe work environment and promote hazard awareness.
Required Education and Work experience
- Diploma in Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, or a related field or certificate in diesel engine repair.
- Minimum 5 yearsof experience as a diesel mechanic, working with heavy equipment and diesel engines in remote or field environments or / and preferably in drilling, mining, or construction industries.

Technical Expertise:
- Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and powertrains.
- Skilled in using diagnostic tools, welding, and fabrication.
Problem-Solving:
- Ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues and recommend effective solutions.
Physical Fitness:
- Capability to work in physically demanding environments, including lifting heavy equipment and working in confined spaces.
Communication:
- Strong ability to collaborate with team members and effectively report issues to supervisors.
Attention to Detail:
- Ensuring repairs and maintenance tasks are performed accurately to avoid operational disruptions.
